SEN and wheelchair travel

If you have child with special educational requirements the local authority normally provide free home to school transport no matter what the distance is from home to the school.  Your child should have suitable supervision on the journey to and from school with an escort or carer provided in addition to the driver of the vehicle.

Children that are required to travel in their wheelchair should be provided with adequate transport.  The National Wheelchair Passport Scheme can provide more information about compatible wheelchairs and vehicles.  Not all wheelchairs are suitable to be clamped into a tracking system.  It is essential that the correct risk assessment is carried out to establish which wheelchairs are compatible with vehicles and tracking systems.  The staff that are loading and unloading wheelchairs and using tracking systems and restraints need to be properly trained to use this equipment including the operation of ramps and tail lifts.  Emergency procedures should be in place for any unforeseen incidents.
